Invitation
Abstracts are invited for Oral Presentations and Poster Presentation for the HGSA 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting. Abstracts are welcome on any topic relevant to human genetics.
Abstracts will be reviewed by the Scientific Committee and will be selected using criteria such as:
* Presentation of new research findings
* Utilisation of new technology in human genetics
* Papers that challenge current thinking in human genetics
Abstracts should be submitted by the presenting author. Only one author per abstract can be nominated as the ‘presenting author’.
Please note that all presenters (Oral Presentations and Posters) must register for the Meeting and pay the appropriate registration fee by the early bird deadline 14 May 2012. It will be assumed any presenter not registered by this date has withdrawn their abstract from the program.

Must be a student, member of HGSA and researcher for <10 years (current/financial).

ASIEM Best Poster Presentaion and Oral Presentation:
Must be a member of HGSA & ASIEM SIG (current/financial)
Molecular Genetics Society of Australasia (MGSA) Best Oral Presentation:
Must be a member of HGSA & MGSA (current/financial)
Australasian Association of Clinical Geneticists (AACG) Best Oral Presentation and Best Poster Presentaion:
Must be a member of HGSA & AACG SIG (current/financial)
Must be a clinical genetics fellow in training
Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors (ASGC) Best Oral Presentation and Poster Presentation:
Must be a member of HGSA & ASGC SIG (current/financial)
Australasian Society of Genetic Counsellors (ASGC) Best Student Oral Presentation/Poster Presentation:
Must be a student member of the HGSA and Member of the ASGC SIG (current/financial)
Australasian Society of Cytogeneticists (ASoC) Best Oral Presentation :
Must be a member of HGSA & ASoC SIG (current/financial)
The best oral presentation from a non-invited speaker will be reimbursed
for ongoing educational expenses.
When submitting an abstract to be considered for any award, please indicate on the online submission form your eligibility and prepare your abstract in accordance with the Abstract Preparation and Submission Guidelines detailed below.
Presentation Types
* Oral Presentation: will be allocated a ten minute presentation followed by five minutes discussion time. Strict time schedules will apply. Particular attention should be paid to keeping PowerPoint presentations short, concise and relevant. Abstracts not selected for Oral Presentations may be eligible for presentation as Posters.
Please note that following acceptance of an abstract for Oral Presentation, the abstract shall not be presented to any other scientific body before the HGSA 2012 Annual Scientific Meeting.
* Poster Presentations: will be on display for the entire Meeting and delegates will be invited to view the Posters and talk to the authors during the lunch breaks. Authors are asked to make themselves available during this time.

Publication of Abstracts
Abstracts accepted for Oral and Poster presentations will be published in the Twin Research & Human Genetics Journal.
Please proofread abstracts carefully before submission to avoid errors. Revisions to abstracts will not be permitted after 26 March 2012, the submission deadline.
Abstract Review Notification
Abstract review notification and allocated presentation format will be communicated to the corresponding authors email address by 4 May 2012. Please note that the details provided as the author contact should be for the nominated main contact for your abstract. All correspondence relating to the submission will be directed to this person, and they should in turn distribute to any/all co-authors.
Speaker Registration
The invitation to submit an abstract does not constitute an offer to pay for travel, accommodation or registration costs associated with the Meeting. Similarly, no speaker fee is paid to successful participants. All speakers must register for the Meeting by 14 May 2012.
Speakers who are not registered by this date will have their abstract withdrawn from the Meeting and it will not be published in the Meeting Program or Twin Research & Human Genetics Journal.

Length and Structure
Maximum of 250 words excluding title and author details will be accepted. Abstracts should be structured to contain an objective, statement of findings or supporting information and key conclusions or recommendations.
Spelling and Grammar
All abstracts should be written in English and thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar before submission.
Layout and Format
* Each abstract must be prepared in Microsoft Word. No other formats will be accepted.
* The title of the abstract should be written in all capital letters. Style: Arial 10 Bold, left aligned.
* List details of the author/s name/s (first name initial only followed by surname, with a comma separating each author. List the authors in order as you would use when publishing an original research paper reporting this work. Style: Arial 10 font Bold, left aligned.
* Name of the presenting author must be underlined.
* List author/s affiliation/s (organisation, city, state), separated by commas. Author/s and affiliation/s to be linked by a superscript number. Style: Arial 10, left aligned, Italics.
* Please note that double spacing should separate the title, author/s name/s, affiliation/s and body of the text.
* Main Body Style: Arial 10, left aligned, maximum 250 words. In the main body please refrain from using printed enhancements such as italics, underlining, bold text etc. Italics may be used for non-English words or scientific names where necessary.
* Please note abstracts may be re-formatted for publication in the program handbook.

Abstract Submission Guidelines
* Abstracts may be submitted online via the Meeting website by Monday 26 March 2012.
* All abstracts must be submitted online via the abstract submission page – faxed or emailed submissions will not be accepted.
* If you wish to submit more than one abstract, you can do so by returning to the “New Abstract” tab on at the top of the Presenter Portal.
* Abstracts should be submitted by the presenting author. Only one author per abstract can be nominated the ‘presenting author’.
* All Oral Presentation submissions must be accompanied by a maximum 100 word biographical paragraph of the presenting author. Biographical details will be used by the session chair for introduction purposes and may also be published in Meeting literature.
* Please note authors of the abstracts accepted for Oral Presentations will be invited to submit the abstract for publication in Twin Research & Human Genetics Journal. Presenting authors will be required to agree to the terms and conditions when they submit their abstract to have it published in the journal.
* Please note that all accepted presenters (Oral Presentations and Posters) must register for the Meeting and pay the appropriate registration fee by the early bird deadline 14 May 2012.
Please ensure you have the following required information available before beginning the online abstract submission process:
* The title of your abstract.
* Preferred presentation type (Oral Presentation or Poster Presentation).
* Name and organisation of your co-author/s.
* Your (the presenting author’s) brief biography (maximum 100 words) for Oral Presentation submissions only. Biographies are to be written in full sentences (not dot points) and in third person.
* Your abstract prepared in the format specified under Abstract Preparation Guidelines detailed above and using the template provided.
ABSTRACTS MUST BE SUBMITTED NO LATER THAN MONDAY 26 MARCH 2012.
